Torch bearer Brad Pitt, the Olympics & is-wine

So, what do Prad Pitt, the Olympics & is-wine have in common? Greece. That's right.

Pitt's latest Hollywood blockbuster "Troy" is set partly in Greece, several thousand years ago, at a time when Greek wine was already well established and respected. Athens will be the focus of the summer Olympics. And is-wine has just welcomed four distinct and delicious Greek wines to its summer collection. For those of you who only remember retsina and ouzo, we guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised. Xinomavro is
the rosé for lovers of really dry, crisp wines and forget Chardonnay when you can have Santorini Asyrtiko.

is-wine also has lots of new whites to choose from. Ones that add a great note to a light meal of seafood salad or fuller ones that work well with BBQ chicken and ribs. Aside from such typical favorites as Chablis, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, why not try something new like our Gruner Veltliner, Ribolla Gialla, or a lush Roero Arneis reminiscent of peach with a lingering finish.

On May 22 from 4-6 pm we'll be trying a delicious crisp Greek Xinomavro
rosé from Amindeo on the high plateaus of northern Greece. On May 15 New York's
Finger Lakes region was highlighted with a tasting of our Prejean Chardonnay. Both wines are perfect
for taking
along on picnics and bright summer days.

Staff Picks: Paul & Pinotage
"South Africa has always attracted me as an intriguing place to visit some day. So I was interested in trying its signature variety, the Pinotage, the first time I encountered it. Loved it. Ranging from a jammy, mouthful of dark berry with a chocolate nose to a smooth, medium-bodied wine with hints of smokiness, Pinotage comes in many enjoyable forms. The medium-bodied is-wine Pinno Pinotage is smooth, slightly smoky, and perfect for summer when a white will not do. And at such a great price, you can afford to drink it regularly."

Paul Schellenberg joins us from the distant land we call Canada, eh! But he is a traveled man, having lived in Japan for a while and spent a lot of time in many other parts of the globe. As a benefit, he learned to speak even more languages than he learned in language school. As more important benefit, he got himself interested in wine, once spending time at work in a restaurant, where he learned more. Of course, our aim at is-wine is to teach him even more about wine so he can teach you, and he will--believe me.

Paul has been developing new marketing for is-wine. He has been responsible for the new Web site look, and some other surprises.

Grape A to Z’s: Exploring Varietals

Hundreds of grape varietals around the world are used to make an array of interesting and delectable wines. How many have you tried? In this regular column, is-wine’s wine expert and co-owner Thomas Pellechia shares a few insights on one of our featured varietals.

Cannonau di Sardegna

The origins of the Cannonau grape are unknown. The general belief is that it appeared on the Italian island of Sardinia in the 14th century, brought from Spain, during a period of Spanish domination continue

Cooking by the Glass

Any excuse to have smoked salmon without the requisite bagel is always welcome. With warm weather, a cool fruity glass of Pinot Grigio, Tocai Friuliano or Riesling combine with Penne With Smoked Salmon for a truly satisfying meal....continue
